Over 13 years ago, my friend and I used to fish for carp in the rivers of Japan. Recently, we were reunited, and our sons got to meet each other for the first time. They wanted to fish as we did, and they ended up creating an unforgettable experience for themselves.

My son, Weston, and I were invited to teach a gyotaku workshop at @scripps_ocean @ucsandiego .
The students had just finished some very data heavy presentations, so an art class helped them unwind and enjoy the rest of their afternoon.

While in Okinawa, my friend @outdoorcheflife and I fished from the craggy cliffs during the tail end of a typhoon, and Yebisu rewarded us with a sheera, or mahi-mahi. It was small but large enough to feed all of us. Before Taku made his delicious dinner, I created this visual memory by way of gyotaku and suminagashi.

Our reproduction prints on handmade washi paper ar

Our reproduction prints on handmade washi paper aren't simply printed out. They are each produced by an industry UV printer, individually urauchi flattened by us, cured until they are ready, then hand stamped with my name seals, and signed by me. Only in this way do I find the final piece to look as close to the original as possible.

In Japan, there are various gyotaku-kai that teach

In Japan, there are various gyotaku-kai that teach and exhibit their version of fish printing. Several years ago, while in France, I was introduced to Master Matsunaga, who led this group in Osaka, called TakuSekai. Matsunaga has since passed away, but his legacy continues on with its members. My son and I, and a couple of dear friends from the US, were fortunate enough to spend the day with them and learn their unique technique of gyotaku printing in color.
