Five years ago, when I reluctantly left my film career to dedicate my time and energy towards a favorite hobby, I never thought that it would bring me to the Smithsonian.
The cafe next to Ocean Hall transformed into the workshop where a sold-out crowd of 75 very enthusiastic participants listened to a talk, watched us demonstrate gyotaku, and then paired up to create their own. It was a bustling couple of hours filled with laughter and surprised faces. I couldn’t have asked for a better venue. Thank you to the Smithsonian team, NOAA, the volunteers, and all those who showed up with an open mind and a willingness to get fishy! What a great way to spend World Ocean’s Day!!
A dream come true, and yet it feels like it’s only now getting started as I’m already daydreaming of next time. . All the fish were provided by NOAA and have all been used for science and research before being donated to this event.
